What’s the Difference Between Hemp Extract and Hemp Oil?
With a plethora of new CBD and hemp products flooding the market, you are probably faced with a new hemp product label at every grocer and superstore you walk into. From mom and pop shaman shops to big corporate beverage manufacturers, the inclusion of CBD in products is on the rise. While CBD is new to the market after being legalized when the 2018 farm bill was signed, hemp oil has been around for decades, primarily in beauty products. Here is a quick rundown of the differences between hemp extract and oil, both derivatives of the hemp plant but with different uses.
Hemp extract is created from the entire hemp plant. It contains CBD as well as many other cannabinoids and terpenes, and is used to treat pain, inflammation, seizures, anxiety, depression, nausea, and migraines. CBD is typically sold in the form of a tincture, flower, vape cartridge, gummy, or lotion.
Hemp oil is created from hemp seeds. It doesn’t contain CBD, THC or any other cannabinoids. It does however contain antioxidants, omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and can make a good nutritional supplement. It also makes a good acne moisturizer as it won’t clog pores and is high in Linoleic Acid.
The FDA has not approved CBD or THC to be sold as a dietary supplement. So, if you see a hemp related product advertised as a nutritional supplement, there’s a good chance it won’t contain any CBD. Whether intentional or not, some manufacturers of hemp seed oil products are mixing up terms and incorrectly marketing their products as CBD oil.
So, how do you tell the difference?
Check the ingredient list on the label. Hemp extract, a CBD product, will be listed as cannabidiol, CBD oil - full or broad spectrum. It may also be called hemp oil, PCR (phytocannabinoid rich) or PCR hemp extracts. Hemp oil, a non-CBD product, will be listed as hemp seed oil, virgin hemp oil, or cannabis sativa seed oil.
Both products have a slew of wonderful benefits, but with a higher price tag, be sure when you are aiming to purchase CBD products, you are getting what you pay for.
